ATV Safety Institute UTV Basic Program

UTV familiarization and operations for new operators.

  • Participants must have use of their agency's UTV.
  • Maximum of 4 personnel for each agency UTV. 
  • UTV must be in trail-ready condition and have proper safety equipment including helmets for all students
    • (List will be provided once registered)

ATV Safety Institute Curriculum

Participants must complete the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA) E-Course before the class date.

Basic UTV Safety Course: This is a 4-hour performance class to provide basic understanding and skills for safe UTV operations. This is a prerequisite for the AdvancedUTV Operators Course

Instructor: Jay Leos (Certified Instructor through ATV Safety Institute)
Curriculum mirrors the UFS UTV Operator’s Course
Report time: Morning Session 0800  Afternoon Session 1300

Required/Personnel: 
Helmet (UTV/ATV, USAR or 3 Point)
Eye protection
Work Gloves
Flashlight
Boots
Long pants
Potable water
(Optional but recommended: Weather-appropriate clothing, Insect Repellant, Sun Block, Snack)

Required/Agency:
10 Orange Traffic Cones 
ANSI Vest for each member
Surveyor/Scene Tape
Fire Extinguisher
UASI Radio (If available)

Restrictions

The safety and learning environment for all participants is our primary considerations.

  • UTV Basic Students must be at least 18 years of age and have the permission of their agency to participate and operate UTVs.
  • UTV Basic staff have full authority to determine the suitability of the vehicles, personnel, and equipment of all participating agencies.
  • Staff determinations are final.
